Jökulsárlón, Iceland

Glacier Lagoon in Iceland is separated from the ocean by a narrow strip of sand. A river cuts through, draining icebergs into the crashing surf along the north Atlantic coast. I came here in the daytime, and knew I had to come back if it cleared up at night.

Amazingly, it did clear up pretty late, but not too late to get warmly dressed for a late night of shooting. I tried shooting up on the little hill near the lagoon, and down on the shore. It was pretty darn dark, but with a long exposure, my camera came up with some spectacular shots. The trick was the clouds, and I just had to be patient.

So, there I was being patient in 20 degree weather next to a lagoon filled with giant icebergs and staring into the night sky, when all of a sudden... the loudest noise I could have imagined when an iceberg near me decided to turn all the way over. The iceberg stirred up the water considerably. I had to scramble up the hillside to stay safe from the icy waters. All was good, but it made me leave the shore to get the rest of my photos from on top of the hill instead. The best photos were from near the shore, and this one is my favorite.
