I went to visit Iceland in January partly because I miss winter, but also because it's the quiet time there.
Iceland reminded me so much of Hawaii Island. Everywhere is recent lava, with the same mossy growth and stunted trees as home. In Iceland the sea is different and the terrain is both volcanic and glacially shaped. Streams and rivers are everywhere, and there's plenty of glaciers too. But still, when I stood on the ground, which was usually lava, with my tripod and looked at the rocks and plants around me I could have been back in Hawaii... a world apart.
The views along the southern highway past Vik are just incredible.
