Comet Neowise put on a once-in-a-lifetime show here on Hawaii island. First it appeared in the early mornings; a week later it switched to early evenings. During the mornings, I'd get up around 1am to drive high enough to be set up above the clouds before the dawn light. That was facing east.

When the show switched to evenings, I drove to the Kona side of our island for a more tropical feel with beach and palm trees. I was so interested in where it would be cloudy and clear that I completely missed that the moon was setting at the same time. My shooting buddy and I showed up early and hiked down to the shoreline to set up our gear and find a nice shot. As it started to get dark, we both noticed the light behind the clouds on the left and didn't realize it was the moon until it had almost set.

This shot was pure fortune as the moon broke through just as the sky became dark enough to make out Comet Neowise. We stuck around for a couple of hours to enjoy the show. Some people played traditional music some distance from us and it added more magic to the evening. ...eventually it got cloudy and we hiked up to the car in the rain... that's Hawaii.
